Fixing Broken Images Due to Account Suspension or Subscription Downgrade
If images on your website suddenly appear as broken links, the cause is often related to your Optimole account status. This can happen in two common scenarios:
- Free plan suspension — Your free plan exceeded its monthly visit limit and the account was automatically suspended.
- Paid plan downgrade — Your paid subscription failed to renew (for example, due to an expired credit card or failed payment), and your account was automatically downgraded to the free plan (In expired state)
In both cases, Optimole stops serving optimized images on your website until the account issue is resolved. This article explains how to identify the problem, restore your account, and verify that images are loading again.
🔍 Verify Your Account Status
Before troubleshooting, confirm whether your account has been suspended or downgraded:
1. Log in to the Optimole Dashboard.
2. Check your current plan displayed on the dashboard. If it shows Free but you previously had a paid plan, your subscription may have been downgraded due to a payment failure.
3. Look for any notification banners or email alerts from Optimole about billing issues or account suspension.
💡 Tip: If you are unsure whether your plan changed, check your email inbox for messages from Optimole or FastSpring (the payment processor) about failed charges or subscription changes.
🔍 Free Plan Visit Limits
The Optimole free plan includes 2,000 monthly visits. A "visit" is counted as a unique daily user who accesses your website, regardless of how many pages they view or images they load. You can learn more about how visits are counted in How does Optimole count the number of visits?.
Common reasons your visit count may spike unexpectedly include:
- Bot traffic — Automated bots and crawlers visiting your site can consume your visit quota quickly.
- Security incidents — Brute-force attacks or vulnerability scans that generate a high volume of 404 or 403 errors are still counted as visits.
- Traffic surges — Sudden increases in legitimate traffic, such as from a viral post or marketing campaign, can push you over the limit.
📝 Note: Optimole counts visits based on IP address and user agent, which means it may track visits that other analytics tools like Google Analytics do not — including bots, crawlers, and users with JavaScript disabled.
⚠️ What Happens When Your Account Is Suspended
When your free plan's visit limit is exceeded:
- Optimole notifies you by email that your account has exceeded its monthly visit quota.
- You are given a short grace period to evaluate whether to upgrade.
- If no action is taken, your account is automatically suspended by the system.
- Your domain is locked to the suspended account and cannot be detached or transferred to a new free account.
- Optimized images served through Optimole will stop loading on your website.
⚠️ Important: Account suspension is enforced automatically by the system. It cannot be manually reversed or overridden by the support team.
✅ How to Resolve a Suspended Free Account
The only way to restore a suspended free account is to upgrade to a paid plan. Manual unsuspension or domain detachment is not available for free accounts.
To upgrade and restore your account:
1. Go to the Optimole Dashboard.
2. Open the Settings tab.
3. Click the Upgrade button and choose a paid plan that fits your traffic needs.
4. Complete the payment details.
5. Once the upgrade is confirmed, your domain is unlocked and Optimole resumes serving optimized images on your website.
📝 Note: Make sure to use the same email address associated with your suspended Optimole account when purchasing the plan. You can review available plans on the Optimole pricing page.
⚠️ Important: Repeated or severe abuse of the free plan may result in permanent account restrictions.
💳 Paid Subscription Downgrade Due to Payment Failure
If you are on a paid Optimole plan (such as Business or Pro) and your subscription renewal payment fails, your account is automatically downgraded to the free plan. This can happen when:
- Your credit card has expired or been replaced.
- The payment charge was declined by your bank.
- Your payment method has insufficient funds.
What happens after a downgrade
When your paid plan is downgraded to the free plan:
- Your account reverts to free plan limits (2,000 monthly visits).
- If your website traffic exceeds the free plan limits, Optimole stops serving optimized images, causing them to appear as broken links.
- You do not need to make any changes to the Optimole WordPress plugin — the issue is entirely on the account and billing side.
⚠️ Important: Images served through the Optimole CDN will stop loading if your site traffic exceeds the free plan quota. This can make images appear as broken links across your entire website.
How to restore your paid subscription
1. Log in to the Optimole Dashboard.
2. Open the Settings tab.
3. Click Manage subscription under your active plan. This redirects you to the FastSpring payment management page.
4. In the Account Details and Payment Methods tab, update your payment method with valid card details.
5. Reactivate or renew your subscription from the Subscriptions tab.
6. Return to the Optimole Dashboard and confirm that your paid plan (for example, Business or Pro) is shown as active.
For detailed steps on updating your payment method, see How to Update Payment Details in Optimole.
💡 Tip: After updating your payment details, it may take a few minutes for your plan status to update in the Optimole Dashboard.
🔄 Clear Caches and Verify Images
After resolving a suspension or restoring your paid subscription, follow these steps to confirm that images are loading correctly:
1. Clear your website cache — If you use a caching plugin (such as WP Super Cache, W3 Total Cache, or LiteSpeed Cache), clear all cached pages so that fresh image URLs are served.
2. Clear your CDN cache — If your website uses a CDN like Cloudflare, purge the CDN cache as well.
3. Clear your browser cache — Open your website in an incognito or private browsing window to bypass any locally cached content.
4. Test your images — Visit several pages on your website and confirm that images load correctly. Optimole-served images should load from URLs containing i.optimole.com.
📝 Note: If images still appear broken after completing these steps, wait a few minutes and try again. In some cases, it can take a short time for the account status change to fully propagate. If the issue persists, contact Optimole support.
🛡️ How to Prevent Future Suspensions or Downgrades
To avoid account issues that cause broken images:
- Monitor your visits regularly in the Optimole Dashboard under the analytics section.
- Block malicious bots using a security plugin or firewall to reduce unwanted traffic.
- Upgrade proactively if your site traffic is approaching the 2,000 visit limit on the free plan.
- Enable the Optimole badge on your website to unlock 20,000 additional free visits. Learn more about this in the Optimole badge guide.
- Keep your payment details up to date to avoid subscription renewal failures. See How to Update Payment Details in Optimole.
- Monitor billing emails from Optimole and FastSpring for any payment failure notifications.
